I live in the country on a hill with no obstructions to the night sky and no street lights or buildings obscuring view. Our back deck is a favorite place to be on beautiful evenings. There were 6 witnesses including myself. A very clear night. We had observed Venus earlier to the West North....just above tree tops of horizon. This came from similar direction. Some one said to look could see Venus again? Was a very bright light moving West to East. So was not a planet or star. Someone said Space station. Which I and others have seen before but? The orbit was wrong...in my thinking though am certainly no expert. So the light was first observed West very similar to Venus reckoning moved steadily in an East direction increasing in size due to proximity. In my observation was not within Earth atmosphere. The light reflection or inherent was white and very bright. As moved from East to West went over us. Not directly more like a 2 o'clock position. I thought object had shape to it hourglass or a length rectangular? There was never blinking lights as an aircraft just steady bright white light that increased again due to proximity. Object continued on West to East path. I say object because stars or aircraft don't do what we observed next. It seemed to be accelerating and gaining altitude...path was steady throughout observation. Then...the best way to describe was like a Star Trek ship going into warp factor....went up...curving up and shot out of sight in a trail of red light then gone. I am 56 years young and this is first time I witnessed anything I felt could truly be categorized as a UFO. "As newspapers all over the world disingenuously ran the story as evidence of the US government's ET coverup - all very healthy for click-through rates, of course - those in the know pointed out that the memo was rather old news (61 years young in fact!) and the end product of an intricate game of Chinese Whispers.

At the root of the memo's claims were a shady businessman looking to make a fast buck and, perhaps, the grander agenda of a rather more respectable organisation.

8 March 1950. The Korean war was three months away and American interest in flying saucers was reaching one of its early peaks thanks to sensational articles by Navy men Major Donald Keyhoe and Commander Robert McLaughlin, published earlier that year in the hugely popular "True" magazine.

In a crammed lecture hall at the University of Denver, Colorado, Silas Newton (left), proprietor of the Newton Oil Company, gave an anonymous presentation in which he described several crashed flying saucers in the possession of the Air Force, and their diminutive humanoid occupants, in some detail.

How Newton (whose identity was later revealed in the "Denver Post") ended up getting a speaking slot at the university remains unclear, but what is known is that he was in cahoots with - or was perhaps himself being conned by - one Leo Gebauer, who had already drawn the FBI's attention during the war for calling on President Roosevelt to be assassinated and replaced with that 'swell guy' Adolf Hitler.

Gebauer was now selling 'doodlebugs' - black boxes for prospecting gold, minerals, gas and other precious metals. These, he claimed, were based on technology from the USAF's crashed ET craft, and Newton was acting as his front man (read a contemporary account of the hoax from "True" magazine here).

Later that year, Newton and Gebauer's tale would become the basis for one of the first best-selling UFO books, "Behind The Flying Saucers" (pictured top, read it here) by "Variety" magazine gossip columnist Frank Scully, seeding belief in crashed saucer tales in thousands of minds, a good thirty years before anyone took interest in the Roswell account, which had crashed and burned overnight in July 1947.

What's interesting is that after Newton's presentation, the audience, composed largely of science and engineering students, were quizzed as to how convincing they felt his lecture had been - apparently 60 percent believed him to be telling the truth - and some of them were then interviewed by Air Force Intelligence officers.

So what was going on in Denver? With the benefit of hindsight it all sounds rather like a textbook market research exercise - if that was the case, what were the Air Force men doing there, and who might they have been conducting the research for?

I've written elsewhere about the US Air Force's RAND (Research and Development) Corporation paper" The Exploitation of Superstition for the purposes of Psychological Warfare" [an intriguing piece of the "Mirage Men" puzzle I only learned about after the book was published!].

The paper, by Jean Hungerford, was officially published by RAND on 14 June 1950 and contains many useful suggestions for making mileage of regional superstitions and folklore, including gods and devils, phantoms, astrologers, magic, good luck charms, chain letters and more. What it neglects to mention, however, is the one subject that "everyone" was talking about at the time - especially the US Air Force (though in hushed tones) - and that, of course, was flying saucers.

It seems unlikely that this was an simply oversight on the part of the author. Maybe the subject was outside her remit, as the paper mostly deals with cases from the two World Wars. The smaller lights were hard to make out from the angle and short amount of time I had to observe the object. I watched the craft gracefully fly across the turnpike in front of me and then head to the right and back of my car as I continued driving. One thing I noticed before I lost sight of the UFO was that the back right light ( one of the three in the triangle formation) was abruptly shut off, leaving only two lights at the rear. This was right before the craft appeared to descend in its flight and that's when I lost view ( and almost crashed my car) Oh and all the lights appeared to be white in color. When I first noticed the craft I thought it must be some new type of military airplane or something but the odd triangular shape of the lights and the fact that none of them were blinking or red tipped me off that this was unusual. Also I have never seen a flying object that had no wings or propellers, like I said, the shorter tips of the diamond shape were pointing to the sides. Also it is hard to explain but the way it flew was eerie, smooth, graceful, seemingly silent and quick, the flying pattern had a slight curve to the right but mostly it just headed straight on. I pulled out my cellphone to take a pic but didn't get much of a shot, instead of fiddling with my phone to try again I decided to abort the effort and just stare at it for as long as possible, I would have pulled over if it were safe but there were plenty of cars on the road zipping around me ( I had slowed down and drove a bit recklessly) I would be very surprised if none of the other cars on the road noticed this peculiar flying object. I can't really explain how I felt, part of me was excited but I wasn't scared ( which is how I always thought I would feel if I saw a UFO) I know it was definitely a UFO but I'm not so sure it was extraterrestrial. I have never seen any craft look or fly the way this one did but at the same time something felt "human" I mean it was so OBVIOUS and didn't look like it was trying to be stealth at all... anyway that's it, the craft looked like it was flying lower and lower and was lost behind a bunch of trees and the hills to the right of my car. I got to my exit and stared at the sky for the rest of the drive home hoping to catch another glimpse.
