You knew Andrew Gold as a popular recording artist, most familiar for his songs, "Lonely Boy" and"Thank You for Being a Friend." I knew him -- for one brief e-mail moment during the summer of 2001 -- as the son of Ernest Gold, the award-winning composer who developed musical scores for such movies as "Exodus" and, of particular interest to me, for United Artists' 1956 documentary motion picture, "UFO: The True Story of Flying Saucers."

Andrew died last week following lingering health issues. Drawing upon messages saved 10 years ago, I decided to post his one e-mail message and my two, keeping in mind how rare and appreciated it can be when a celebrity spares a minute or two to answer questions from inquiring minds. Frankly, I was a little surprised that he shared his and his grandparents' thoughts about UFOs in an e-mail to a stranger such as I, but including those few words of a personal nature really did speak kindly about the writer.

Strange Lights Reported In The Sky

Something weird is going on.

Strange lights floating around in the night sky have been reported in Larimer and Weld counties Monday and Tuesday nights, according to Clifford Clift, the Greeley representative with the Mutual UFO Network.

Clift said Wednesday he was notified of four lights in a boomerang formation in sky over Loveland Monday night; at abut 8 p.m. Tuesday, a caller who did not leave a name or address reported strange lights in the area of Weld County Road 17 and U.S. 34. The light reportedly appeared out of no where, then disappeared rapidly, Clift said.

Clift said he was returning to Greeley from Fort Collins at about the same time the lights were being reported Tuesday night, but he did not see anything.

Margie Martinez, spokesman with the Weld County Sheriff's Office, confirmed that Weld dispatch received the call, but said the caller refused to leave a name or address.

Clift said the calls are not new.

"In the past six months there has been a lot of activity reported over Fort Collins," with six or seven reports of strange lights in the sky, he said, which would be in line with those reported over Loveland earlier this week. The reports, he added, coincide with reports from other parts of the country.

"It's almost as if they, whatever they might be, want to be seen," Clift said. He said the UFO group has been in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration to see if air traffic controllers have reported any strange activity, but he said he was not confident the group would get a response.

Meanwhile, Eloise Campanella, spokeswoman for the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Larimer dispatch has not received any of the reports of strange lights.

Mars Soil Sample Return Mission Advanced

The next steps for NASA at Mars should be a soil sample return a internal MARS PROGRAM PLANNING GROUP (MPPG) SUGGESTS IN A REPORT released by the space agency this week. The strategy should build toward returning Martian rocks and dirt to Earth to search for signs of past life by laying out a series of options that NASA could employ to get pieces of the Red Planet in scientists' hands here on Earth. The space agency is now mulling those options and could announce its chosen path by early next year, when the White House releases its proposed budget for fiscal year 2014.

Possible Mars soil sample return

NASA also hopes to establish a "GATEWAY SPACECRAFT" at the far side of the moon, that will serves as a staging area for manned missions beyond Earth's orbit, the Orlando Sentinel reported recently, citing internal NASA documents.

NASA put together the MARS STUDY TEAM in the wake of budget cuts recently made to the Mars robotic exploration program and in consideration the priorities laid out by the U.S. National Research Council's Planetary Decadal Survey in 2011 which included a Mars soil sample return among the highest priorities. The space agency also took into consideration President Barack Obama's April 2010 directive to get astronauts to the Mars or its moons by the mid-2030s. Humans could even be involved in the sample-return process, according to the MPPG report. Astronauts aboard NASA's Orion capsule, which is currently under development, could intercept the Martian sample in deep space, secure it in a contained environment, and bring it safely down to Earth.

Exactly when a Martian sample could come down to Earth remains uncertain. But NASA is considering launching the first enabling mission along this path in 2018, or perhaps 2020. A complicating factor is that NASA has just 800 million or so to work with for the project through 2018.

Orion astronauts at Mars?

The MPPG report discusses lofting the single-shot mission as early as 2024, aboard NASA's huge Space Launch System rocket. NASA wants the SLS to make its first test flight by 2017 and to be ready to carry crews by 2021. "POPULAR SCIENCE" explains a ROBOT-TO-HUMAN hand-off in space of a Martain soil sample.

NASA will launch a robotic explorer that will analyze the Martian atmosphere next year. In 2016, the agency will launch a small lander that will analyze the Martian interior. But deep budget cuts have forced NASA to bail out of more ambitious joint Mars missions with the European Space Agency in 2016 and 2018.

I see so much false and misleading material about flying saucers and related matters (especially on the internet) that I am sure one could do a column every day pointing out the errors and false claims and still not cover all the garbage. But who would pay somebody to do that? And who would read it anyway?

I very recently received the 2nd issue (April/May 2008) of a new, six times a year, slick magazine from England known as Alien Worlds. The editor/publisher is Stuart Miller who has been busy posting on the internet about UFOs for some time. This issue is in large format with relatively small print, sometimes hard to read for us old guys, often with blue print on black paper. It is glossy and, because of all the color, would be hard to Xerox. There are many articles covering a wide variety of subjects. I strongly disagree with some, but find others of interest. The magazine isn't cheap costing 3 pounds 99 or about 8.00 US. More information can be obtained from Stuart at The New House, Church Bank, Richmond road, Bowdon, Altrincham, Cheshire WA14 3NW, UK. Several things caught my eye. One is that there is, somewhat surprisingly, a lot of SETI related material. My new book Flying Saucers and Science has an entire chapter on the cult of SETI.I note that Dr. Ian Morrison head of the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, the UK, misrepresents the Fermi Paradox as do most SETI specialists. He says, page 78,"... in something like about 10million years, maybe a hundred million years, you could, in principle, colonize the whole galaxy." All the suitable planets. What Fermi said was if that's possible, then why aren't they here, why have we never come across any other alien life form?". Sounds like he wants them to be waiting at the bus stop or airport. This is certainly not what Fermi said though many astronomers would like to believe that is what he said. He actually said (assuming the colonizing capability) "So where is everybody?" Whole books have been written with various answers to the question known as the Fermi Paradox.

My own answer, based on what I heard about Fermi at the University of Chicago (he died while I was there) was that he was very fond of using questions as a teaching tool. One obvious answer (mine) is "We don't know where all of them are, but we know some are visiting Earth, some few people within the government in intelligence and military circles know a great deal about them and have even recovered wreckage and bodies, tried to shoot them down (see Frank Feschino's Shoot Them Down), and has been lying about what it knows big time".

Fermi who, unlike most of the SETI guys, academic astronomers, ancient academics and fossilized physicists who attack ufology, knew very well, from his very important work on the multi Billion Dollar Black Budget Manhattan Project, that huge and very expensive projects involving world class scientists can be conducted in total secrecy... no publications in the Physical Review. Obviously, it is very difficult to justify searching for ET signals with radio telescopes, if aliens are already coming here and some Earthlings know it.

Another article that caught my eye was a relatively brief one (pp16,17) by Paul Kimball (producer of a number of high quality TV Documentaries)Above and Beyond: Ufology's two Biggest Problems: The Condon Effect and Roswellism. I agree with Paul that the widespread publicity given to the University of Colorado's loudly proclaimed (by Dr. Edward U. Condon)1969 "scientific" conclusions that there was nothing to UFOs had a devastating effect on many who might have been willing to investigate UFOs, or teach classes, or sponsor PhD theses about them, but had now no willingness to risk their professional reputations by doing so. Membership in NICAP and APRO dropped precipitously. Lazy and busy journalists and scientists now had an excellent excuse to ignore the entire question of UFOs and have very often done so.

There were courageous ufologists such as James E. MacDonald and J. Allen Hynek who pointed out that Condon's conclusions were contradicted by the data in his report. Their views certainly reached fewer people than the paeans of Condon praise from such reporters as Walter Sullivan, science editor of the New York Times, and the National Academy of Sciences. We slowly seem to be overcoming Condonism,to some extent illustrating physicist Max Planck's comment that "New ideas come to be accepted, not because their opponents come to believe in them, but because their opponents die and a new generation grows up that is accustomed to them".

Paul defines Roswellism "in broad strokes, it is:1.The unequivocal acceptance of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (i.e.UFOs are alien spacecraft) as fact; 2. The unequivocal acceptance that alien spacecraft crash landed near Roswell in 1947 (and the resulting acceptance that any other crashed flying saucer story may be true) ; and 3. The unequivocal acceptance that the American Government has covered up the truth about 1 and 2 since1947, in an organized conspiracy of silence that represents a "Cosmic Watergate".

I have very serious problems with these. I and other serious ufologist are skeptical and critical of much in ufology, so unequivocal seems way too strong. There is a very large difference between my conclusion, after intensive study, that SOME UFOs are alien spacecraft, and the notion, implied by Paul, that ufologists believe ALL UFOs are alien spacecraft. I don't know of any serious ufologist who has expressed the latter view. Yes, I am certainly convinced on the basis of a great deal of evidence that a crashed flying saucer, and bodies, were recovered near Roswell in 1947.I would be the first to point out, as I have, that there is a lot of irrelevant, false nonsense published about Roswell and other crashes. The garbage (much of it published by the government in lying and misleading volumes), has helped obfuscate the truth.

Paul speaks of the "Aztec hoax in the early 1950s". Scott and Suzanne Ramsey's outstanding and persistent research on the Aztec event which was in March, 1948, and should be published in book form by the end of 2008, should certainly dispel the label "hoax".

What does Paul mean by an organized "conspiracy of silence"? I never thought of highly classified research and development and intelligence programs as organized "conspiracies of silence" when working on them. Nice terminology. Certainly the Manhattan Project would qualify wouldn't it? How about the Corona Spy Satellite successfully launched for the first of many times in 1960 and which obtained more data on Soviet military installations than all the U-2 flights which preceded it, but was not discussed publicly until 1995? What about the NRO's 7 very expensive Poppy satellites launched to spy on Soviet shipping between 1962 and 1971 and not discussed until 2005? How about the breaking of the German and Japanese codes involving more than 12,000 people and not disclosed for over 25 years?. I guess you could say "Conspiracies of Silence" which sounds ominous. Covering up data about alien visitations and technology is certainly of no less importance to national security than these major multi-billion dollar programs. What is the big deal?

Paul claims " Roswellism has achieved nothing of substance... based on a flawed unproved set of assumptions masquerading as facts." He doesn't really point out what these are other than to say it is unscientific, a-historical, and no different than Condon's methodology. I beg to differ. We point to clear and unambiguous evidence such as first hand testimony from people directly involved such as retired General T.J. DuBose, Major Marcel, Bill Brazel; contemporary press coverage and research demonstrating government and skeptical misrepresentation. Condon ignored the research of his own people and the data in his own report. So are black holes and worm holes unproved, but they are indeed very useful concepts, so what? Roswell has certainly opened a can of worms for the government and caused many people to look at the UFO question in new ways and certainly made debunkers very unhappy. Too bad. Paul seems to want clear and unambiguous tests such as DNA testing and maybe aliens introduced to the Canadian House of Commons. He does provide details of some interesting events at that august body. Many things in science aren't like that... or in law either.

Newton's laws are very useful in understanding how the universe operates, even though that aren't correct at the small and large limits of the universe. The biggest source of outright lies about Roswell are the 2 big reports on Roswell provided by the government not by ufologists. What are we supposed to make of crash test dummies, 6' tall, weighing 175 pounds, dropped in 1953 and thereafter, and later used as an "explanation" for reports of small bodies observed in 1947? What are we to make of Colonel Cavitt's claim that the Roswell wreckage covered an area 20 feet square and could easily fit in a single car when even the July 9,1947, contemporary cover-up newspaper account said it covered an area 200 yards in diameter. The New York Times front page coverage of the silly Mogul balloon explanation was indeed as bad as Condonism, since Pulitzer Prize winning Journalist William Broad ignored the relevant evidence (Mogul simply doesn't fit... so one must acquit).I demonstrate government UFO lies in an article on my website www.stantonfriedman.com. One must further note that there are no licensing regulations for qualifying ufologists. We in the field can do little to keep people from calling themselves ufologists. There are licensing regulations for doctors and lawyers, electricians and plumbers, not ufologists. Certainly the preponderance of the evidence indicates, some UFOs are alien spacecraft, Roswell involved a crashed flying saucer, and there has been a substantial government cover-up concerning many aspects of ufology

The object was at least 5x brighter than any other light in the sky. My friend and I didn't say anything but were both watching it and he said to me "are you watching this". I said "do you mean that very bright star like object moving E to W? Yes of course I'm watching it". To which he responded "what do you think it is?". Keeping in mind I've been going to my summer lake house for 20 years and go star/meteor/northern lights watching for as long as I can remember - I said "I don't know, it's very bright and obviously moving very quickly so it's probably a low earth orbit satellite". Then when the object was about 10degrees above the tree line it just stopped dead. My friend who was with me said "I really don't feel comfortable at all right now what the F is that". Also keep in mind that I'm much more pragmatic about these sorts of things as it's probably the 10th or 11th time I've seen something very strange in the sky like that over the years. And in 3 cases captured on camera while taking scenic or sunset pictures sometimes with multiple glowing objects moving in frame in successive pictures while they changed positions in the sky and in the camera frame. If MUFON is interested in those pictures I can dig them up off my previous digital camera. So anyway the object hovered/remained in place for about 3 mins and then dissappeared in the blink of an eye - not like winked out but just gone. Needless to say my friend was freaked out as the first time he's seen something like that and we wet back inside the house and told my dad and other friend the story. The lake I have a house on is right in the middle of the Ottawa river valley so we get some pretty extreme weather and is a major fly over point for transcontinental and regional type flights from Ottawa to Toronto so I've seen probably close to 1000 different types of planes fly over in my summers there and also hundreds of satelites, shooting stars, so I definitely know that what I saw was none of those because of the dead stop hovering for multiple minutes after it was moving very fast overhead and then just disappearing like that. The night was dead quiet and completely clear and can always hear planes ever if they are at 40,000 ft. For the first time ever, the United States government is acknowledging the existence of the enigmatic military base in the southern Nevada desert famously known as Area 51. But its purpose, according to recently released documents, is far less spectacular than most UFO enthusiasts would have hoped.

The National Security Archive at George Washington University recently published a report entitled 'The Secret History of the U-2.' It chronicles the history and importance of the spy planes that were frequently used during the Cold War.

In their research for the report, the NSA the researchers obtained declassified documents about the planes that actually reference Area 51 on several occasions - as well as a map of the secret base.

The documents were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request made in 2005.

Area 51 typically is associated with governmental secrecy, particularly in terms of UFOs and extra terrestrials. Conspiracy theorists often claim that a downed alien spacecraft is being held and studied in the facility, based more on the fact that the government has - until now - never acknowledged that the base exists and kept the goings on inside its walls a secret than actual, documented facts.

Of the many UFO theories, conspiracy buffs also believe the site was used to - among other things - hold meetings with extraterrestrial life forms, design exotic energy weapons, develop means for weather control, develop time travel and host meetings of the shadowy Majestic 12 one world government organization.

In developing the U-2, the government needed a secret - and reliable - test facility somewhere in the United States.

On April 12, 1955, scouts were flying over the Nevada desert when they spotted Groom Lake, according to 'The Central Intelligence Agency and Overhead Reconnaissance,' an internal CIA history of the U-2 program written by Gregory W. Pedlow and Donald E. Welzenbach that was declassified when the NSA submitted their FOIA request.

The CIA chose Groom Lake in Nevada and brought the first U-2s there in July of 1955

'On 12 April 1955, Richard Bissell and Col. Osmund Ritland (the senior Air Force officer on the project staff) flew over Nevada with Kelly Johnson on a small Beechcraft plane piloted by Lockheed's chief test pilot, Tony LeVier,' the document reads. 'They spotted what appeared to be an airstrip by a salt flat known as Groom Lake, near the northeast corner of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC) Nevada Proving Ground.'

The men agreed that Groom Lake was the perfect spot for the new, top-secret base, and asked the AEC to add it to its real estate holdings in Nevada.

'President Eisenhower also approved the addition of this strip of wasteland, known by its map designation as Area 51, to the Nevada Test Site,' the history continues.

'The outlines of Area 51 are shown on current unclassified maps as a small rectangular area adjoining the northeast corner of the much larger Nevada Test Site. To make the new facility in the middle of nowhere sound more attractive to his workers, Kelly Johnson called it the Paradise Ranch, which was soon shortened to the Ranch.'

The first planes were delivered to Area 51 on July 25, 1955, and the trials began two days later.

The first documented test flight occurred on August 4, 1955.

The employees who worked at the base actually were flown in from Burbank, California on Monday mornings and returned on Friday afternoons, beginning on October 3, 1955.

The Air Force took over the base when the CIA was done with it in 1957, and continued using it as a training ground for U-2 pilots.

The new declassified documents don't reveal any earth-shattering details, but as Jeffrey Richelson, a senior fellow with the National Security Archive who found the documents, points out, 'It marks an end of official secrecy about the facts of Area 51

'It opens up the possibility that future accounts of this and other aerial projects will be less redacted, more fully explained in terms of their presence in Area 51," he tells the Las Vegas Sun.

(I love this stuff), and I thought my mom was joking when she ran into my room and said "Do you want to see a UFO?" and walked away.I laughed and thought she heard me watching that show, but I got up and followed her to our front door of the house. She pointed across the street to the left of our neighbor's house and to the left of a big oak tree.This is what I saw... a star-like object in the sky, that seemed to be a lot closer than a star, and it was flashing different colors from blue to red mostly, but white too and sometimes a "flash" of yellow that made the object double in size. It seemed as if the lights were rotating in a circular motion because the blue and red were almost non-stop.The object would slightly move in the sky because we were not moving from our spot on the patio, and the object would get behind the big branches of the oak tree without us moving at all. The object went slightly right, and then it would rise slightly and after a couple of minutes, it would go back a little left and get out of the way of the oak tree in clear sight again.My mom and girlfriend both tired of staring at the object for 10-20 minutes, and they both went inside. I walked off my patio and closer to the object, and noticed a blue star-like object zoom right over the top of the main object. The object that zoomed over it did not stop briefly or stand still - it just zoomed over the top and went right by.I ran inside and told my mom I thought a plane went over the "UFO." My mom and I went back to our spot on the front patio, and after 5 minutes or so of watching the object we both saw out of the eastern sky what we thought at first was a plane come from the direction of Plattsburgh, New York, and headed straight for the "UFO."It flew over the top of the "UFO," and was blinking a red light at the front, a green light in the middle, and a red light at the back, that's why I thought it was a plane. But no longer then 15-30 seconds went by, and coming from the western sky and no more then 2-300 yards above our house, a 2nd helicopter (I call it 2nd because it was doing the same exact thing the first what I had thought to be a plane object was doing) flew directly over our house, and was flashing a red light on front, green light in the middle, and red light at the back.The 2nd helicopter went towards the exact direction the 1st plane/helicopter had started from. The 2 helicopter seemed to be making a perfect circle around the "UFO" and at this point. My mom seemed frightened a little and said, "What the
is going on around here?" The helicopters went out of sight and I watched the object for 5 minutes and went inside to get some water because it was still 90 degrees out... I went back outside with my girlfriend 5-10 minutes later and the object was gone!I was very mad it was gone because I wanted to see it when it went away. We got in the car and started to drive towards where the object was, but it was not in the night sky anymore. I was quite upset and went back home. I am still quite excited with what seems to be my first sighting. I also pulled my iPhone out and recorded (mostly by voice) what I was seeing at the time."
