Current case in point is that of the desperate, celebrity and significance seeking Stuart Robbins, who long ago declared that the Billy Meier case and its contents were simply a hoax. Having been silent on the matter for some time, Robbins has popped up again with another brilliant bit of pseudo-science, theorizing that a great many UFO sightings can be explained by quadcopters with lights on them.
It seems that Robbins has figured out though that the UFO topic will draw some (the most) traffic to his site. He erroneously also thinks that it's an easy target overall for debunking, such as the myriad, flimsy New Age and paranormal subjects he goes after, and that he'll look brilliant in taking it on. Well, ooops to that.
But the worst part of dealing with unrepentant wimps and poseurs like Robbins is that they are shameless in their blatant cowardice and complete lack of intellectual honesty.

As of this writing, it actually doesn't appear on Robbins' blog. Nor did I receive an explanation why it wasn't posted. The fact that it absolutely shreds his nonsensical claim before it can...get off the ground was obviously enough to prevent it from being posted. Robbins is known to reject posts that strongly dismantle his prejudicial, unscientific and inaccurate claims, especially regarding the Billy Meier case.
While Robbins' blog actually relies on the Meier case for generating any kind of serious interest, it's a wonder that he hasn't developed some spine, something even remotely resembling...integrity. Again, defining oneself as a skeptic is an indication that one simply has prejudices that they rely on when they can't handle the truth.

SEVERAL Maryborough residents have come forward this week with similar reports of UFO sightings above the city.
Described as "bright orange lights twice the size of evening stars", the flying objects were spotted last Thursday night.
Peta Duggan and her partner were travelling along Kent St in Newtown at 8.30pm when they say they saw five orange lights.
"I looked up and saw what I thought was a pole with orange lights.
"Then I realised there were no poles with orange lights around there and slowed the car down to get a better look.
"We saw five lights in the sky, three fairly close together and two further down to the horizon.

(I was having difficulty posting my comment reply to Paul, so I just bumped it up to a blog post. Actually, I am hoping that this final message brings our little debate to a close with each of us, essentially agreeing to disagree. We will see where it ends up...)
Paul, there is a lot to respond to here. However, I think we are converging towards a clarification of our views on this matter and, while I think we are very close on most things, these last few exchanges definitely highlight where we differ.

Personally, when I research some of these cases, often times I do not find them to be 'trivial' at all. Clearly we differ in this view.

I think science has 'lost interest' for a number of reasons, but the most important reason is simply this. The UFO phenomenon does not present itself in a form that is subject to the scientific method. A key component, probably the key component, of the scientific method is that a phenomenon can be reproduced by independent scientists on demand under controlled laboratory conditions. This is an extraordinarily powerful tool and provides us with our greatest certainty about how the Universe operates.
UFOs are a fleeting phenomenon which cannot be reproduced on demand. The only 'evidence' for them is witness testimony, sometimes radar, sometimes photographic, and sometimes trace landing data. You can only investigate them 'after the fact'. Therefore, UFO cases really only lend themselves to forensic techniques and the scientific method can't really illuminate the topic at all.
This is the reason that the subject is at 'the fringe'. It's elusive nature, the quality of the 'evidence', and the fact that none of it can be replicated. Where we can measure it's effects is in sociology and psychology; admittedly very 'soft' sciences.

What I was saying at the time was that the alien autopsy, whether 'real' or 'not real' would have a major cultural impact; which I believe has been the case. I also had a theory that someone involved in this piece of performance art might be using the film as a 'disinformation' effort. That was only a theory, which has been proven false with time. The reason I posited this theory is that, in the past, intelligence agencies *have* used the UFO phenomenon to exercise disinformation campaigns, for motives unknown. (If you want references to this I can provide them, but I think this would be a diversion for now).
Over the years the 'alien autopsy' has become a dominant meme in our culture and reappears in numerous forms. My prediction then, and remains so today, that the alien autopsy film had the measurable effect of 'inoculating' the general population to these images and concepts. I believe the general population is inoculated to such an extent there were someone to come out with a 'real' alien autopsy film tomorrow, it would largely be met with a collective yawn. That's a long sight away from the kind of panic that was caused by the 'War of the Worlds' radio broadcast back in 1938.
To me the significance of the alien autopsy film is in how it impacted our culture and I would argue that the impact has been strong. Even today, after Philip Mantle so brilliantly dismantled the entire hoax in great detail, there are still millions of people who believe it's the 'real thing'. I find that development to be quite telling.

I understand that the case is closed for you. However, not so much for me. Having studied this case, including the time-line as well as Lonnie's testimony, I am not able to 100% accept a 'hoax' explanation. Lonnie died last year, and went to his grave never revealing his hoax, if that were the case. I found him to come across as an honest and sincere man, who dedicated his life to public service, so, I remain an agnostic on the Lonnia Zamoro case.
"(2) Travis Walton : Liar, and hoaxer. Disappeared for five days, put his co-workers at risk of a murder charge, all for a good laugh and a book and movie deal.

Once again, I can see how you are comfortable with this explanation. I, however, am not. First of all Travis is my 'facebook friend', so we clearly have a deep, close, and personal relationship. Seriously, I have looked into this case and while 'hoax' is without question a valid theory, I am still not convinced that it is the ultimate explanation.
You say you are an 'open minded' skeptic but wouldn't a truly open minded skeptic allow for the possibility that Travis Walton, and his co-workers, told the truth? For myself, that is where I remain. Perhaps it was a hoax, though that has never been proven. Perhaps it happened as the principles say. I don't know for sure one way or the other. I continue to find the case interesting.

That is most likely the case. However, it was investigated by the USAF and it remains an infamous project blue book case. It remains on the books, and to this day, 'unexplained'. I consider primarily just two possibilities in all three of these cases. Either the principles themselves conducted a hoax, or they did not. There isn't a whole lot of wriggle room in between. I remain an agnostic on each case but I do note that no one has every been able to definitively prove the hoax hypothesis in any of these three instances. I particularly like this case due to its extreme high weirdness.
"(4) Japan Airlines - Alaska Flight : Liars, reports of radar confirmation, lies as well.
* No one was lying. Mistaken crew (Not uncommon, as I mentioned before, pilots make errors far more dramatic than this, even resulting in their death) coupled with anomalous radar display (that today can not be examined!). Case closed."
Well, that's one theory. Another theory would be that they are accurately reporting an incident that occurred. While you find the case 'closed', I find that it remains wide open and squarely in the corner of the unknown.
"(5) Iran F-14 UFO dogfight. Liars, radar confirmation reports, more lies.
* Fabricated historical event, none of the actual information or people are available. One liar, --the person who fabricated the event. Case closed."
Actually, the people involved are available, and have testified openly and publicly on this incident a number of times. As well, one of the pilots involved in this case has an entire chapter in Leslie Kean's new book describing the incident in first person. So, it is not true that the people involved are not available. Additionally, there are documents obtained through FOIA, dated to the time of the incident, detailing these events. So, it is absolutely by no means a 'fabricated historical' event.
I don't find this case to be 'closed' in any way. It's just old.
(6) Betty Cash : Liar, faked illness to try to win a lawsuit.
* I am fine with this explanation. Case closed.
In fact, I find that explanation to be a bit difficult to swallow. This incident remains purely an unknown to me, though I think testing of a military aircraft a possible explanation for the incident.
"(7) Rendelsham Forest Incident : Tons of liars, liars everywhere. Everyone lied, top to bottom."

I don't find this case even close to being closed. It is incredibly well documented, with live audio tape recording of the people involved in the incident at the time. This case is by no means 'closed' in my book.
In summary, the skeptic believes:
"We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances."
Since all the explanations are sufficient, these cases are closed. They may not be likely events, but the reports are extremely rare, so the unlikely, because it is sufficient, it the best explanation.
So, I think I grasp your view of the situation. Personally, I find that response entirely unsatisfying. My quest for knowledge does not end simply because I can imagine, no matter how tortured or in conflict with the facts of a case, a 'natural cause'.
In the world I live in, I try to remain an agnostic. I am willing to allow for the possibility of the unknown. Does that make me a gullible fool? Perhaps so..but I find my life to be more interesting if I consider all of the evidence rather than dismiss it out of hand, or simply refuse to look at it at all.
In other words, we have a clearly distinct difference of opinion about how to consider reports of anomalous phenomenon.
That's ok, the world is big enough for both of us. However, I do not think I am being irrational by being open to considering the possibility that anomalous phenomenon might exist in the world. Maybe you do, that's ok, I get that. From my perspective I don't really believe in the 'supernatural', I like to think of the 'supernatural' as being that part of the natural world we haven't figured out yet.
Each of us has a different sliding bar that we are going to use to accept or reject as forming the basis for our reality. For some people, all they have to do is read something written in a book by a desert tribe from 3,500 years ago and they accept it as fact. I think you and I are in agreement that this is probably not a very good way to understand and describe reality.
I think we both also agree that the scientific method is the most powerful tool in human history to describe and understand the Universe.
Where we disagree is that I am willing to consider as 'evidence' human experience and forensic evidence after the fact as another contributing factor to a way of viewing and interpreting reality.
That's fine, I think we have identified where the two of us part on this. However, I don't personally feel that the fact that I am willing to consider such data as possibly comprising some aspects of reality we do not yet currently understand, as tantamount to making me a Mormon, Scientologist, Hare Krishna, or New Age bubble head.
I truly don't know 'what' the UFO phenomenon is, or what it ultimately represents, but I am not yet completely satisfied with any theories, including the 'mundane' explanations you are happy with yourself.

Summary: One of the very best photographs always hard of a triangular UFO was snapped by an unknown cameraman in Belgium in April of 1990. Assured by individual regular together with UFOs, it became the cornerstone of the Belgian UFO flap of 1989. On November 29, 1989, a triangular UFO together with lights sparking under was seen by multiple witnesses-three groups of policemen included. Internet and social media sites apparently escalated "news" of a Canadian UFO crash at Jackhead First Nation February 18, 2015. The original story was a gag, according to Canadian UFO Researcher Chris Rutkowski, but details continued anyway.
Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) Assistant National Director Stu Bundy quickly chased down the UFO crash details and discovered it was a hoax.
Canada's CBC News was in touch with Canadian military who reported that the Manitoba sighting report was actually an airplane from a training exercise.

EVERY time Huw Lloyd ventures on to the peaks above his farmhouse, his thoughts return to a strange night almost 40 years ago - and a UFO mystery that has never been explained.

PurrlGurrl and Kurt Peters observe that we UFO buffs only have UFO accounts/reports, not UFOs themselves, with which to deal or strive to explain; all we have are the reports.
That is basically true (unless one believes that Wright-Patterson Air Base in Dayton, Ohio houses UFO artifacts and remains, the thesis of the Carey/Schmitt book, THE REAL AREA 51, castigated by me in a review, you might recall).
But are UFO reports to be treated so dismissively?
I don't think so, and here's why...
A person who observes a UFO and reports it is subject to an intervention by a UFO organization, police report, or media member.
The report, the initial observation, will, generally, be succinct, pithy to the point of frustration by anyone who wants a precise, thorough accounting, but it will contain a gist of what was seen or experienced, with the salient details.
People aren't devoid of descriptive talent, and usually accurate as to what was the essence of their observation, even though the consensus is that witness accounts are flawed by the observer's errant sensory input or biased mind-set.
The gist, no matter what, is usually accurate, however; that is, the basic observation, stripped of errant accretions, is not far from the reality.
The problem with UFO reports is that those taking down the accounts often have a livid bias, one way or another - an ET tendency (MUFON) or an atheistic tendency (the cops).
That bias will end up, subliminally and often overtly, in UFO reports.
(I've included examples prior to this posted insert, and you are familiar with many elaborate UFO tales that are marred by falsehoods, erroneous additions, and errors of various kinds.)
But if one can get back to original accounts, by the witnesses themselves - sooner than later - one will have a substantive narrative worthy of exegesis.
(The problem with Roswell, as our skeptical friends continue to tell us, is that witness accounts at his late stage of the story, and even in 1978, are marred by the vicissitudes of memory, age, mental disfigurements of many kinds, and even purposeful confabulations.)
But what if we have pristine renderings, some found in the Vallee/Aubeck book, WONDERS IN THE SKY, or in cave art and ancient clay tablet indentations?
Or what about this:
"... I heard a roar and saw a flame in the sky to the southwest some distance away... Flame was bluish and sort of orange, too... Sort of motionless flame. Slowly descending.... it was a narrow type of flame. It was like a "streamed down" -- funnel type - narrower at the top than at bottom. Flame possibly three degrees or so in width - not wide..."Flame was about twice as wide at bottom than top and about four times as high as top was wide. Did not notice any object at top, did not notice if top of flame was level. Sun was west... Could not see bottom of flame because it was behind the hill."
"No smoke noted."
"Noise was a roar, not a blast. Not like a jet..."
"Suddenly noted a shiny type object... Saw two people in white coveralls very close to object. One of these persons seemed to turn and look straight at my car and seemed startled - seemed to quickly jump somewhat."

Could there be, is there, a finer UFO report extant? I don't think so.
This is a pure, credible UFO report.
What it betokens is up for grabs, and has been since 1964, but as a report, it is without equal and a superb piece of "evidence" for the UFO researcher.
UFO not needed. The report is ample enough, and complete enough to allow conjecture and investigatory query.
If all we have are reports like this, or only this one, then Peters' and PG's plaint falls on deaf ears. A UFO at hand, while desired perhaps, is not necessary to see that something odd happened in Socorro in 1964. And that something appears (and has appeared) to be of such a queer nature that anyone with an inquisitive mind would see an explanation or, at least, offer a reasoned conjecture or hypothesis as to what Police Officer Zamora saw and reported.
And it is a report, after all....not a UFO, but a description of one that allows a sensible person to conclude that, in 1964, a thing was seen that provides objective mystery.
If we had other UFO reports, not unlike the Zamora report - and we do actually -- then one can make assumptions and statements about the reports and that which appears in them.
To pretend one can't do so is obstinacy of an intransigent kind, something that belies scientific or scientific-like inquiry.

Hi all,I am emailed from time to time asking me whether or not there has been any further information on a particular post. I thought I would take the opportunity to update you all on a few developments.1. THE 1942 "TROMP" CASE:In 1957, an individual named William Jan Methorst of Melbourne, reported a fascinating and oft Internet quoted ( e.g. click here) observation to the Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society. In a letter to the Society, Methorst told how he had been on board the Dutch cruiser "Tromp" when he had sighted a UAP circling the ship. Click here to read my original post with more details. I wondered if by any chance Methorst was still alive and whether any original documentation from 1944 could still be found. An electoral roll check at the State Library of South Australia did indeed reveal that one William Jan Methorst lived in 1957 at the address shown on the 1957 letter. However, I failed to be able to trace him beyond 1959 when he and his wife disappeared off the Victorian electoral rolls.Recently, I managed to locate William Jan Methorst in Preston East, Melbourne in the 1954 electoral rolls; then in Reservoir East, Melbourne in 1957 (already found,) then to Fortitude Valley in Brisbane in 1963. At each address up to that date, he was accompanied by a Ruth Methorst, and his occupation was shown as a carpenter.In 1972, he and Ruth appear in the in the North Brisbane electoral roll with his occupation then listed as caretaker. There is also a Berend Jan Methorst shown as living at the same address as William and Ruth. I couldn't track either William or Ruth beyond 1972 using the electoral rolls. However, Berend Jan Methorst turns up as late as 1980 in the electoral division of St Lucia, sub-division of Ryan in Brisbane, Queensland. Using the electoral rolls for 2009, I located Berend Jan to an address is Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT.) I also found that he was listed in the Telstra electronic white pages. I decided to send a letter rather than telephone him. It has now been four weeks since I despatched the letter. Although I put my return address on the back of the envelope, and it has not been returned to me suggesting that he has indeed received it, I have had no reply from him. So, the trail has gone cold on this tantilising 1942 event. 2. 1964 GUM CREEK, SOUTH AUSTRALIA ENTITY CASE:A classic entity case was reported by a South Australian woman, Doris Player, in February 1964. Launched from Mildura, Victoria, these balloons sometimes drifted as far as Nowra, New South Wales; Canberra, ACT; Eyre Peninsula, South Australia,; and Bendigo, Victoria. A Project Hibal balloon, flight 292 was scheduled for launch on 5 Apr 1966, the day before the Westall incident.
