UNITED STATES - NATIVE AMERICANSPetroglyphs dating back thousands of years ago by ancient Indians in the American Southwest. According to Indian folklore, two objects collided high in the sky and one crash-landed in the region of Death Valley. Some men arrived (presumably in another ship) and spent some time repairing the damaged craft and were observed by the local Indians. The two images below may possibly depict the ship (left) used by the men who came to repair the damaged craft. In comparing the two images, the one on the right seems to depict structural damage around the edges and the bottom. Could it be the one that allegedly crashed? JAPANThis is an artistic reproduction of a relief found in a labyrinth on the island Jotuo in the Toengt'ing lake. An expedition took place in 1957 (two years before an earthquake in that region). The expedition was led by professor Tsj'i Pen-Lai. They found various reliefs showing "humans" in strange clothes which looked like astronaut suits (hose like objects attached to the clothes). A fourteenth century fresco of the Madonna and Child depict on the top right side the image of a UFO hovering in the distance. A blow up of this fresco reveals tremendous details about this UFO including port holes. It seems to indicate a religious involvement between UFO's and the appearance of the Christ Child.
This painting is called "The Madonna with Saint Giovannino". It was painted in the 15th century by Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494) and hangs as part of the Loeser collection in the Palazzo Vecchio. Above Mary's right shoulder is a disk shaped object. Below is a blow up of this section and a man and his dog can clearly be seen looking up at the object.

The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is filled with accounts of encounters with divine beings. Abraham and the 'smoking firepot' and a flaming torch that appeared in the sky as a sign of acceptance of his sacrifice (Genesis 15:17), the 'pillar of cloud'by day and the 'pillar of fire' by night that led Moses and the Israelites (Exodus 13:22), God landing on Mount Sinai in smoke, with a sound of a trumpet before them (Exodus19:18-19), Elijah being 'carried up to heaven' in a 'chariot of fire' which created a whirlwind (II Kings 2:11), and of course, Ezekiel's famous close encounter. (Ezekiel 1:1-28).The New Testament likewise contains many familiar-sounding sightings. Foremost is famous Star of Bethlehem which Matthew records that the Wise Men - probably Zoroastrian astronomer-priests - followed till it came to rest over the place where the child was (Matt. 2:9) - most unusual behavior for a supernova, comet, or planetary conjunction! The birth itself had been immediately announced by the appearance of a messenger shining with the glory of the Lord to shepherds in the fields at night. (Luke 2:9) Downing, himself a minister, argues that many of the terms describing such glorious and shining lights could be descriptions of UFOs. Even the shape believed to be the Holy Spirit that was seen to descend like a dove at Christ's baptism and the bright cloud at the Transfiguration, (Matt. 17:1-8) might have been extraterrestrial craft. The men in shining clothes, such as those the disciples believed were Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration, would then have been their occupants. After the Crucifixion, yet another of these fellows came out of the sky, rolled the stone away from the tomb and announced the Resurrection. And of course, at the end of Jesus mission on Earth, he rose into the air and a cloud took him out of their sight while two of those mysterious Men in White consoled the disciples (Acts 1:6-11).

As usual, the media distillations of journal articles are rarely a good judge of the actual content of the article in question. Such is the case with the media hubbub caused by the article in Acta Astronautica by Baum, Haqq-Misra and Domagal-Goldman titled "Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis."
While Acta Astronautica requires a subscription, Dr. Baum has now placed the article on his website. It's a worthy read for many reasons. As I have discussed before, the article is a series of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) First Contact scenarios, organized according to the possible impact on humanity. It's loosely divided into categories: negative, positive and neutral. Most of the scenarios might seem quite familiar: ETI that enslaves us; outright destruction of Earth by ETI; helpful ETI that helps us solve problems; ETI that ignores us; ETI that spreads biological threat etc. The media had a field day with the negatives and the right-leaning media had fun with the scenarios that were based on environmental concerns. The primary ecological scenario involves ETI destroying us because of what we are doing to our environment and what we might do to the rest of the galaxy. Snickering media or not, it's an interesting set of questions: at what point would ETI consider us a threat and what might they do to eliminate the threat?
Yet, it's the extrapolation behind the rather general scenarios that provides the real meat to the article. The authors raise the idea that ETI might have a diverse population making up their civilization, with many competing, and perhaps conflicting, cultures and views. This possibility of ETI heterogeneity is of course based on our only possible study group: humans. If we were to land on another planet and meet another civilization, it seems likely that there would be a raging debate over what we should do. Some may advocate taking any advantage we can get. Others might say that we should have a policy of non-interference and only study the newly discovered civilization. So, if that's how humans would react, who's to say an extraterrestrial civilization visiting Earth wouldn't have exactly the same situation? The authors point out that power shifts and changes in attitudes in ETI leadership could be dangerous for humans. We could receive mixed signals from competing ETI interests. This is an important point and it examines First Contact with a complexity that I think has been lacking. It seems likely that extraterrestrial First Contact will be extremely complex and nuanced, perhaps in ways that we do not understand at first.
Baum, et al. tackle many of what I would call the more subtle scenarios. Hollywood is fixated with marauding aliens or beneficent ones. In reality, the reaction of humans could be the most significant concern in a First Contact scenario. The authors point out that the detection of ETI could make existing conflicts here on Earth much worse, as nations compete for control. Religious groups could find a challenge to their beliefs and react quite negatively and perhaps even violently.
There is a primary way that Baum, et al. seek to define ETI: Universalist versus selfish. What this means for us would seem clear at first glance, but once again the authors examine the shadings of these definitions. For example, ETI could seek to destroy us for Universalist reasons- they want to save the rest of the galaxy from us. I would provide additional shading to the selfish end of the spectrum, not examined in the paper. Perhaps we offer ETI something significant that would not require our destruction. Perhaps it is in their best interest to befriend us?
The authors call for more in-depth study in their conclusion. With any scenario being possible and no data of any sort, it's quite difficult to put together a quantitative risk analysis. However, they argue that we should work in that direction, as it would prove invaluable in the case of First Contact. They call for a development of scenarios, free from pre-conceived notions about what we expect ETI to be like. They also suggest that we should carefully consider whether we should send signals into space or respond to an engineered signal that we might find.
I would agree that caution and careful consideration are essential parts of any response to any type of First Contact. We quite simply have not examined this issue enough. The existence of ETI may be completely unknown to us now, but if we do discover an extraterrestrial civilization, the impact to humanity could be dramatic.
VALLETTA, Malta (Mon, Jul 16) - A tourist from Romania photographed a UFO coincidently whilst he was walking knock down the seafront in the now northeast Malta tourist town of Qawra.

According to details; the 29-year-old Zfort Ertfay witnessed something dark suspended over the sea on Thursday (July 12) at about 8:00 pm (seal time). Ertfay managed to bump the object in his cell-phone camera, helpless to figure out out what anticipated it was, pole that it was triangular in shape, spectral and flying at high speed.

The truth isn't out there... it's been stored in a warehouse for 56 years.
The National Declassification Center in College Park, Md., opened one of more than 100 cardboard boxes from the Air Force recently and came across a 114-page document from 1956 sure to interest the tin-foil-hat crowd: a document describing a secret program by the Air Force to build a flying saucer.
"These records have been classified probably since their creation during the '50s," Neil Carmichael, director of the declassification review division at NDC, told Popular Mechanics, which first posted news of the complete document. "It's like somebody went into somebody's office, emptied out a filing cabinet, stuck it in a box, sealed it, and sent it off to the federal records center. It was deemed permanently valuable at some point in its life and that's why we have it today."
Last week, the group posted a few images and a brief blog entry on the program, which was estimated to cost just 3.2 million, the report said. But an NDC representative told FoxNews.com that the group is "in the process of digitizing" the entire document and has not yet released it onto its website.
Carmichael told FoxNews.com this document is just a drop in the agency's bucket.
"We have about 400 million pages to get through the executive order President Obama signed in 2009," he said. "I tell my techs, 'If you find anything interesting, let us know.'"
And every once in a while, they find something good.
"Some of these reports are kind of interesting," he told FoxNews.com. Talk about an understatement!
The newly released documents, not yet posted on the website of the National Declassification Center, offer details on a Cold War-era plan to build a round, vertical takf and landing aircraft that can only be described as a flying saucer.
The disk-shaped craft -- which comes complete with an ejector seat and was powered by a "ram jet" -- was designed to reach a top speed of Mach 4 and reach a ceiling of more than 100,000 feet, according to the lengthy document, which is titled "Project 1794, Final Development Summary Report" and dated 1956.
It reveals that the Air Force had contracted the construction of the craft to a Canadian company, Avro Aircraft Limited in Ontario.
"Six Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbo-jet s -- 1,900 lb. thrust, 22.0" overall diameter, 525 lb weight each -- are mounted radially in the wing, exhausting inwards; and used as gas generators to drive a pair of contra-rotating centrifigual impellers by means of a radial inflow turbine," the document says.
Much of the 114-page document is devoted to detailed descriptions and schematics of the propulsion system, as tested in a scale model seen in a series of photographs. But the report appears to conclude that the flying saucer was better in concept than actual execution.
"The efficiency of the airframe at supersonic speed appears good and that of the engine reasonable, so that a long supersonic cruise range is also forecast," it said. But in testing, the craft -- essentially a glorified hovercraft -- simply didn't work as hoped.
"Apparently, as it gained in altitude, it would start to wobble uncontrollably," Carmichael explained.
The report notes a followupplan to develop weapons suitable for the saucer, to allow it to be used as for reconnaissance, as an interceptor, or as a tactical bomber. Still, the concept of the U.S. Air Force attempting to build a flying saucer at the height of the Cold War is captivating, leading some to posit a connection between the rumors of a crashed saucer at Roswell, N.M., and the public fascination with Area 51.
After all, the Air Force dubbed it Project 1794 -- rearrange those numbers and you'll get 1947, the year of the Roswell incident.
"I've been doing this for 20 years and it never ceases to amaze me what we find in the records," Carmichael told FoxNews.com.

An international panel of two dozen former pilots and government officials called on the U.S. government on Monday to reopen its generation-old UFO investigation as a matter of safety and security given continuing reports about flying discs, glowing spheres and other strange sightings.
"Especially after the attacks of 9/11, it is no longer satisfactory to ignore radar returns... which cannot be associated with performances of existing aircraft and helicopters," they said in a statement released at a news conference.
