Astronomer FRANK DRAKE is one of those people who are against sending out signals to search for extraterrestrial life because, for them, it makes no sense at all.

However, even Vatican library documents are now available online. The amount of original source material is increasing by the minute. If extraterrestrial researchers could bypass security codes, they could search all sorts of databases to find both original source material and follow-up works examining those materials in a new light. If they had the ability to import huge amounts of information (from our perspective) they might be able to map the human condition to such an extent that they could begin to understand our civilization in a complexity that even we might have trouble fully understanding.
I know... there's plenty of speculation there. But go with me on this thought. If extraterrestrials did have access to most of our databases, giving them a link to published works, websites and social media, there would be two major issues. The first would be context. It's one thing to take in vast amounts of information, it's quite another to place it into context. One would assume that such enterprising aliens would have a clear objective for plugging-in to the Internet. They would be conducting the research to accomplish something, even if it was simply the quest for information about another civilization. To actually take action, to say hello or do something to engage humans, they would clearly need a reason to do so. That reason would likely shape the nature of their search and provide a context for their research. However, they would be missing the human context, that being the thousands and thousands of years of history and development that brought us to this point in human society. Sure, they could find plenty of articles and books about our development, but would that really provide the context of what it is to be human?
They may not even care. But if they hope to influence us somehow or find a good method for making contact, they would be very interested in that context. Human fiction could provide a way to develop context. Fiction is about feelings, needs and interactions expressed in a complex set of scenarios. If an alien researcher was to take the time to examine our stories that researcher would have a much better insight into what it is to be human.
Even then, there is one major part of knowledge that would be lacking: experiential knowledge. Experiential knowledge, needless to say, is gained through experience. Knowledge gathered on the Internet would be a priori knowledge. Writer Barry Lopez uses the distinction to delve into human experience in regards to the environment. Unless you experience nature you cannot truly understand ecosystems. Dr. Thomasina Borkman of George Mason University defines experiential knowledge as "truth based on personal experience with a phenomenon." Aliens would certainly have their own experiential knowledge. But they would not have experiential knowledge of life on Earth, unless they had lived it.
Reading all the non-fiction and fiction available on the Internet would not teach you what a human feels when they experience everyday life. It would not provide insight into how humans might react under a particular set of circumstances. In fact, if the aliens did peruse human works of fiction in an attempt to tap-in to experiential knowledge, that writing could be quite confusing. An alien researcher would have to sort out how humans really act, versus how our fiction likes to describe us acting. Without context, how would you understand those fine shadings in fiction? Just look at horror novels. There are no vampires to be found here on Earth. However, after just a few minutes spent perusing popular fiction, you would think Earth is overrun with overwrought (and often shirtless) vampires.
In the end, alien researchers might turn to the sources known for carefully stating objective, process, results and conclusions: the scientific research paper. By sticking to peer reviewed research journals aliens could find a discernable logic in communication and most importantly a common, established form of communication. Research papers follow the same general format and provide a common context for understanding. Once you know the format of a scientific paper, you can start to categorize the information you receive, and compile it in a way that might help direct extraterrestrial contact choices.
There's plenty that alien researchers could accomplish without experiential knowledge, but they would need to be careful about moving forward with decisions based on a priori knowledge. The human world is complex enough for us humans. One would imagine that for an extraterrestrial civilization the complications of human society could take a long time to decipher.

An astrobiologist working at NASA's Marshall Space Flying Center in Alabama has stated that he found alien life form. In a recently published article in the "Journal of Cosmology", Dr. Richard B. Hoover claims to have discovered a preserved alien life form residing inside a meteor.
Dr. Hoover began his study by deducing what type of meteor would be best suited to alien life form. He narrowed his search to the CI class of carbonaceous chrondite meteors. These meteors are rich in water, amino acids, and other organic compounds -- a virtual pantry for a microorganism. Picking the most ideal type of CI meteorite -- CI1 optimized his chances, but narrowed his pool of available samples. It is believed that only nine such meteorites exist on earth. Dr. Hoover was able to obtain one of the few meteorites. After smashing a piece of the meteorite, he then scanned the result dust and fragments, using scanning-electron microscopes and field emissions electron-scanning microscopes. He found what appeared to be a fossilized bacterium. The identified specimen appears remarkably similar to the bacteria "Titanospirillum velox", a sulfur-loving archaebacteria, which was discovered in 1999 mud samples from Spain.
The meteorite was reportedly broken under sterile conditions. Still, some skeptics argue that the meteorite could have been contaminated. The meteorite was collected in the frigid reaches of Antarctica immediately after their observed fall. The fact that they were collected so quickly limits the possibility that indigenous microbes contaminated them. The possibility of atmospheric contamination still remains, though.
Dr. Hoover believes that this is not a case of contamination. He is convinced that he has become the first human to record a scientifically verifiable encounter with an alien being. He states in a recent interview, "I interpret it as indicating that life is more broadly distributed than restricted strictly to the planet Earth. This field of study has just barely been touched -- because quite frankly, a great many scientist would say that this is impossible."
In the published study, Dr. Hoover writes an accompanying note encouraging others to review his work. "Given the controversial nature of his discovery, we have invited 100 experts and have issued a general invitation to over 5,000 scientists from the scientific community to review the paper and to offer their critical analysis. No other paper in the history of science has undergone such a thorough vetting, and never before in the history of science has the scientific community been given the opportunity to critically analyze an important research paper before it is published."
Dr. David Marais, an astrobiologist at NASA's AMES Research Center states, "It's an extraordinary claim, and thus I'll need extraordinary evidence."

The discovery of life elsewhere in the Solar System would 'profoundly change our understanding of where we came from and our place in the cosmos', astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell told Sam Wong ahead of his public lecture on the subject this week
Is there anybody out there? That's the big question scientists are asking in the emerging field of astrobiology. Its practitioners bring together expertise from a variety of disciplines in their quest to determine whether there is life beyond our green and pleasant home planet.
"The question of whether we are alone in the universe or not is something that every single one of us has wondered about at one point," says Lewis Dartnell, an astrobiology researcher at University College London and author of Life In The Universe: A Beginner's Guide. "Whatever the answer, I think it would profoundly change our understanding of where we came from and our place in the cosmos."
At first glance the prospects of finding life elsewhere in our own solar system don't look good, since every planetary body other than our own is either scorching hot or ferociously cold. Then again, we know that on Earth life can flourish in the unlikeliest locations, from polar ice caps to hydrothermal vents reaching 113C.
The first place to look has naturally been our neighbouring planet, Mars. When Nasa dispatched two Viking spacecraft to land on the Red Planet in the 1970s, they sent equipment designed to carry out experiments to test whether there might be microorganisms in the Martian soil.
Stealth technology, as developed by humans, is the use of technology to obscure aircraft from radar. Taken in a larger extraterrestrial context, it is the use of technology to cloak or disguise space craft from radar or even visual detection. Stealth is among the biggest issues when it comes to extraterrestrial visitation. There are a number of possibilities. First, of course, extraterrestrials may not even exist. Second, they may be here and are observing us using some form of stealth technology, or at the very least very careful maneuvering. Third, they have been creating periodic "obvious sightings" to try and prepare us for First Contact (not my idea at all, but rather a relatively popular explanation for UFOs). Fourth, they have had contact in the past, and through policy change, or change of heart, decided to now employ stealth technology.
All of the possibilities have implications. Let's face it: we have basically scared ourselves silly with our own cute stories. Very seldom are extraterrestrials happy, helpful visitors. The human imagination thrives on drama and there is much more drama in nasty aliens than kind extraterrestrials. And as I have stated before, either extreme is a rather na"ive view of the possibilities. Extraterrestrials would most likely be at least as complex as us in political, social and scientific ways. Earlier this week I spoke of a suggestion for our extraterrestrial visitors: use stealth technology until you are ready for First Contact. However, if you go back a few months you'll notice I reference stealth in something I call the original requests. Simply put, these are requests we would need to make of any extraterrestrial visitors:
-No use of stealth or cloaking technology for any space or aircraft in Earth atmosphere or our solar system.
-No craft visiting Earth without permission.
-No contact with other humans without approval of the United Nations or assigned governing body.
-A promise of non-interference in Earth governments and other social systems.
I suppose it may sounds like a contradiction, but I believe both things to be important. Extraterrestrials will need to use stealth leading up to First Contact. Starting with the revelation of First Contact those same extraterrestrials would have to promise never to use stealth technology again. In a sense, stealth use before First Contact is entirely necessary and after First Contact it is absolutely unacceptable.
Why so?
It comes down to trust. In fact the entire basis of First Contact and the development of a new relationship with an extraterrestrial civilization is based on trust. We trust that they are being honest with us. We trust that they are not trying to manipulate us for their own reasons. We trust that they will be honest and open with us about all previous contact and any potential manipulation that may have occurred in the past.
This won't be easy.
You can imagine the UFO hunters, alien abduction claimants and many others would demand answers. And given the attention they have garnered here on Earth, some rational explanation will be important for the start of a proper relationship after First Contact.
We, the human race, tend to be a jumpy bunch. If extraterrestrials do not use stealth when observing us, or somehow come barreling into our atmosphere unannounced, we'll likely have a hostile reception waiting.
I think in the end it comes down to our rights. We have been establishing over the last few thousand years the concept of rights for humans here on Earth. In that same respect we have to consider the rights of humans when coming into contact with outside civilizations. I came up with these basic ideas, just to get the ball rolling.

9. The solar system of Earth is the property and home of citizens of Earth.
10. Earthlings can decide which beings can enter the solar system and under what conditions.
11. Earthlings can decide which beings can enter Earth atmosphere and under what conditions.
12. Humans will enter into the larger known universe as productive and responsible citizens.
13. Humans will decide exactly how that entry into the larger known universe proceeds.
14. Humans will expect honesty from all parties interacting with the citizens of planet Earth.
15. Humans will demand honesty and forthright disclosure of any past interactions between alien civilizations and people of the planet Earth.
One final note: I talk here only of human rights, but who is to say extraterrestrial visitors will think that only humans deserve rights? They could believe in rights for all animal life. Let's take the alien perspective for a moment. Why would they want to give us the sum of their many years of collected knowledge? We haven't earned it. Secondly, it's hard to say what we would do with it in the first place. Even if the extraterrestrial civilization in question was just hundreds of years in advance of us, it seems unlikely we could even begin to comprehend their understanding of science and technology. After all, science as we know it is a system of building blocks with each discovery leading to many more years of dedicated research and in laborious, painstaking turn eventually leading to new discoveries. Alien knowledge would likely be built in the same fashion and in a set of circumstances probably much different than ours. What could we make of the end result? We would come to realize, some years down the road, that we had lost everything we cared about. Sounds pretty negative, right? Well, it's something to consider, not matter how outlandish it may seem.
