"On Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at about 4:30 p.m., I was driving from my office in Londonderry, New Hampshire, en route to my home in Andover, Massachusetts, a trip of about 21 miles. I was on Route 93, a major interstate highway which runs between Boston and northern New Hampshire. I was between exits #3 and #4, about a mile north of a truck weighing station, traveling at about 65 m.p.h. There was very little traffic, and the sun had not yet set. By chance, I happened to look up, and I noticed a flying disc of gray/metallic color which seemed to be hovering at an altitude of about 100 feet, off to the side of the highway. It appeared to be perfectly round, about 25 meters in diameter, perhaps seven or eight meters in thickness at the middle, looking very much like a classical "flying saucer." It seemed to have an observation dome made of glass (or similar transparent material), but I did not see anyone or anything within the dome. It seemed to have four "landing legs" extended from the underside. It appeared to be swaying slightly from side to side. My first thought was that it must be an advertising balloon designed to look like a "UFO" which was meant to attract attention to a business or store. However, I have passed that location on many subsequent trips and have observed no store in the area - and in fact, there is no street or road! I slowed down to try to get a closer look at the object, but it my view of it was obscured by a stand of trees atop a bluff. When I passed beyond the bluff, I looked back to try to view the object again, but it was gone. I have never seen anything like this before, but I was not at all frightened. Rather, I was intrigued, and I wished that I had been able to get closer to it and view it for more than eight or nine seconds. I wish I knew what it was, and I wonder whether anyone else saw something of this nature in the area at the time. I was a member of a couple of flying units in England. That's where I really first became aware of UFOs, although I had some experiences as a child that make me think I might have seen some then.The first time I remember seeing one as a grownup, London control asked us if we'd mind intercepting an unidentified flying object that was over the Oxford Airdrome. We were flying tankers. A tanker was up every night -- not necessarily one of ours but one from a squadron, kind of like a gas station in the air in case the weather got bad in England. So we'd put all the fighters to bed, and then we'd usually fly navigation missions over the North Sea. In any case, this particular night they asked us if we'd intercept the UFO, and we started letting down toward it. I guess we were a hundred miles or so away, and over the coast of England they cleared traffic for us so we could intercept the aliens' heading. We were at around 30,000 feet and the UFO was at 1,000 feet, so we're diving down on it at 425 miles an hour. I picked it up on the aircraft radar going 135 miles per hour. It was a very large target and I'd gotten a solid return on the radar, in other words, it appeared to be a steel structure. Control gave us headings, and a couple of miles out from it, it just flew off, up into space, almost like a shuttle launch. I don't know if you've ever seen that at night, but there are a lot of lights, there is explosive power. I asked control if there was some kind of a rocket launch in England and they said no. The UFO had disappeared and we could continue on our mission.That kind of made me a believer; there was something out there. I couldn't see a structure exactly, but there were a lot of lights and it was on the radar -- both ground and airborne radar. To me that meant something probably not from this Earth had visited England. Talking to other pilots and their navigators and so on, you'll realize that more of us have seen something than most people think. I had one chap who was telling me that in Korea he had one right on his wing, right next to him! The number of stories starts mounting, and they're told by people you believe, because they have no reason to lie to you. All you really have to do is start asking. I'd say one out of three people will tell you that they've seen a UFO. And then maybe six months later the ones who said they hadn't seen any UFOs would tell you that they have seen them.CLOSE ENCOUNTERSI've come to the point where I just believe that this is all true. In intelligence work especially, you start getting reports, usually about some pilot who chased a UFO or something along those lines.One of my friends chased one in Georgia. He was right on its tail when it went down close to the deck, about two feet off the ground. It was moving at a couple hundred miles an hour, and as he was chasing it, it went right down to the ground level, flying across the fields. The UFO was something like fifty feet in diameter and the two outer ends, which looked like wings, kept churning out red smoke, which was the dust off the field. My friend was with a couple of other pilots. They were right behind the UFO, but they didn't have any cameras on the planes. They chased this thing, and it was almost like it was playing a game with them, because it obviously had greater performance. They were convinced that something was there, something real. They saw the clouds of smoke coming from it and were concerned that the dust coming off the fields could get into their engines and cause an accident or something.I remember one F-106 pilot who told me that he and his wingmen had dived on a UFO in an experience very similar to ours, but this was in Colorado. At the time, the F-106 was the hottest airplane in the air force. They dove on this thing, which was hovering, doing about thirteen hundred miles an hour. When they got near it, it took off like they were standing still. I suppose there's always the possibility that we have some tantastic, experimental aircraft that nobody knows about.Most of the sorties involve someone in a high-performance aircraft, and these things are not twice as fast as the aircraft - they are ten times faster, a hundred times faster. They go too fast for the eye to follow, like trying to watch a speeding bullet. I personally think that they actually fly away and don't just disappear. Video will pick them up and show that they are moving - but obviously very fast, because the cameras barely keep up. When they are farther away, then they don't appear as fast, because you have a wider range on the film. In some cases they might actually disappear. The eye can't always see infrared and different aspects. In other words, technically the craft is still here, but one, the eye isn't able to keep up with it, or two, it's changing into an infrared spectrum or some other spectrum that the eye can't normally pick up. There have been cases where dogs or cats seem to be able to follow the craft, but people can't see it. There are indications that a craft will appear or disapper, and the animal still seems to be able to see it.I have a friend who flew out of Trenton airport in a light plane. He was an airline pilot,, but he would fly these light planes for fun. He was over Pinceton when he looked off to the north and saw a UFO coming pretty fast straight at him. He thought it might hit him. Frankly, he didn't know what to do, so he just kept flying straight ahead, trying to figure out what was this thing, which looked like a disc, was going to go. First it looked like it might hit him, and then it dover underneath. It might have been just a hundred or two hundred feet below his altitude, but he passed right over it or almost right over it. He banked his plane and could see the top. He said there was a very interesting design, essentially like a wheel with four spokes on it. The ends of the spokes spread out onto the wingtips, onto all four sides of the wingtips, and crossed in the middle like a certain kind of old cross. In any case, he came about the closest to a UFO in flight that I know of. He's an engineer, intelligent, and all that, and I'm pretty sure he saw what he saw.I was a master naviator in the air force. One day we received a report that F-4s had taken off out of Teheran, to chase a UFO that people on the ground had reported seeing. Crews on commercial airliners also saw it, coming into Tehran from something like forty miles north of the city. It was probably a large craft,,several hundred feet in diameter. Crews on the F-4s, which are usually flown in pairs with a wingman, were going to consider attacking this UFO. They turned on the fire control for their weapons, got ready to launch missiles and the systems went down, as if in some way the aliens had control over their weapons. We know the aliens are tremendously powerful and have electromagnetic energy, the equivalent of your local generating station. They have a huge amount of power, and they have worked with some stuff that can be really nasty. This energy might have been what caused their fire control systems to shut down, or the aliens could have actually accomplished it with some other method. There have been many other cases, for example, where they've stopped cars, that kind of thing, showing they have some kind of capability along those lines. There have been cases of aliens turning off engines, turning off lights in homes. Anyway, as I understand it, a second ship was sort of launched from the mothership. The F-4s were essentially inoperable, but when they got about twenty miles away, their systems came back on and they could land without any problem. But I think the crews were scared. The little ship came down and appeared to land north of the city. Although they had a pretty good fix on where it went down, when they went out the next morning they couldn't find any indication of what had happened whether the ship had landed. Many people on the ground saw the craft, and of course it was seen from the air.There are other interesting cases with multiple witnesses and where craft were also picked up on radar. In other words, it's not just one person's eyes looking at it. Obviously many sightings are false identification of one kind or another, but when you have radar, both ground and airborne and multiple witnesses, you have a pretty good case!I think the ridicule factor is what's defeated excellent reporting. I've had people in the Ukraine, Crimea, Russia, Argentina and different far flung places of the Earth sending me cases. In the summer of 1977, I was part of a hot-shot forest fire crew (the elite and only hot shot group for Western Washington region). Our days off were Tuesday and Wednesday and this event happened on a Tuesday, after 4th of July and before our end of contract in August. There was not much to do in Bellingham after dark in those days, so after cashing our paychecks and having dinner in Bellingham, we would go to the top of a mountain (South of Highway 542 between Deming and Glacier, WA) and have satellite races. Since we were so high up we had to wait until way after sunset when it was dark enough to see the satellites for the races. This consisted of staring at the sky and yelling out to 'claim' a satellite, as it passed over the apex of the tree. We had recently turned in our analog watches for indigo backlit digital, with stop watch features. So, we were doing the one thing that we could do at night - time the aircraft in the night sky. Some of our group were former military and paratrooper trained smoke jumpers, and were pretty familiar with craft in the sky, at that time. On the night in question, we saw a red orb streaking across the sky coming at the same path as the satellites. As it passed over the tree, everyone began clamoring that it was 'theirs' and it looked like a sure winner. We had been timing all the satellites from the tree on the eastern side (about 25-30 degrees from the eastern horizon) to the edge of the western horizon (at 180 degrees), clocking about 27 to 32 seconds to do the route. They would be abreast of us in about 15 seconds from leaving the tree to being right in front of us. This red orb made it in about 6 seconds. As it came abreast of us, it stopped dead and hovered. We didn't know if it was reacting to our presence, as we were at the top of the hill with a couple large pickups / crew cabs, in a clearing with a clean line of site in 220 degrees sweep around us. It was a completely clear sky, with no cloud cover at all. As our timing took this object past the 30 second mark, (since it was standing still), it was the clear loser of the race. Those who had claimed it were moaning about losing, and being ribbed by the others. Then, Doug noticed that fighter jets were scrambling from Whidbey Navel Air Station. If we were located in the middle of an invisible sphere around us, and 90 degrees was above us, we were looking due north at the object (Which could have been over Canada.) as it was approximately 110 degrees (relative to our position) due north. The fighter jets appeared to be below us and to the left. (If level with us was 180 degrees (relative), the fighter jets were 200 to 200 degrees downwards, and to the left, or westward of us. Mostly around the Navel Air Station.) The jets came up one right after the other, as fast as they could (probably about 5-7 seconds apart.) We don't know how many actually made it up before we noticed them, as we were transfixed, staring at the orb. We counted 6 fighters coming up, and they fanned out from Sumas, WA to over the ocean. At this time the orb waited, fighters came towards us but did not make it (to be under the orb). Once the jets were in the sky, we noticed that the orb had slightly moved east, (reversed course, slightly backward), and was moving rapidly into outer space, for it appeared dimmer. The fighter jets were moving really slowly in comparison. The jets did not at all gain the altitude of the other orb, which appeared to be under intelligent control, and was not a ball of gas or electrical phenomenon or extrusion from a cloud/lightening (no clouds). After a while, the jets started doing a grid pattern, going up to the Canadian border, which was less than 10 miles directly in front of us, and then turning around to continue a grid pattern. We were up so high on the mountain, our heads were looking nearly straight up at the orb, and downward towards the fighter jets. It seemed like the jets were flying below us, and mostly staying around the base. At about a half hour after coming up, the jets started landing back at base. We counted around 7 going down, with the final one landing about 45 minutes to an hour, after it had come up. Until the jets scrambled, we thought we were looking at experimental military craft. It was obviously not a satellite, since it was faster, different color, and stopped absolutely from high speed to total stillness, without moving. There was no wobbliness, as would be expected from a helicopter, with which the smoke jumpers were familiar. Also, the red light was stationary at a magnitude higher than the fighter jets, since it was so small in comparison to the jets, which were appearing as moving in a straight line and whitish in color. In 1977 the animal mutilations were much in the news, and a few abductions were starting to be discussed in the media, so some of the questions we were asking ourselves were "Why were the jets apparently looking for this craft? Why did it stop in front of us? Did we have any missing time?" Since we were home before midnight, we did not have any missing time. The next day, our squad leader said, "Are we going to talk about this?" And we replied, "Well, we thought it was a satellite until it stopped. And then US military experimental craft, until the jets came. Then it went out to outer space. So, I guess it is Unidentified Flying Object. What's more to say?" We didn't go out to do satellite races any more, and a few weeks later our contracts as firefighters came to an end. I haven't stated this publically until now, but I thought it was time to get it down, before I die or forget. I have not seen this recorded anywhere else, so I wanted to put another piece of the puzzle down, in case this all ties together with other sightings somehow. I have finally finished entering all the data on Canadian UFO reports in 2012. There's a reason why it's taken me longer than usual, and I will explain that when Gf Dittman and I publish the 2012 Canadian UFO Survey in a week or so.
Having gone through all the cases that were reported, I found some that were quite interesting. (Most were not interesting, BTW.) Among them was the following report from the MUFON case listings. The event occurred at 9:40 pm on January 9, 2012, in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island. Here's the report, verbatim:
My wife and I were on our back deck while I had a smoke between 9:30 and 10pm Monday the 9th of January. The sky was cloudless and the moon bright, but from above to the west the sky was dark and star filled, as the moon was far east. I had my Celestron spotter binocs out acclimizing as it was very crisp and cold that night, but with no wind and no clouds. It was cold crisp and clear, and I could hear transcontinentals 30 miles away to the south. My wife pointed out a bright light almost due west. I trained on this light with binoculars. And could see a craft I just assumed was a helicopter. I saw a red light on one side and a green light on the other, a bright white light to give the definition of triangle, and a dimmer white LEDish strobe light from within the center. Other than the strobe light the others seemed absurdly bright, yet not blinding. What I assumed was a helicopter rotated 360* without an iota of deviation up and down, or side to side. I was zoomed in considerably, lateral movement would have been obvious. When it stopped rotating, pointed our direction was a bright light, but not spot light, just very bright. This was soon obviously the nose of the craft, as it headed directly to our location and directly above us on our back step. About 450 to 500 feet. (I later confirmed the altitude, by measuring the focus of my binoculars to a duck blind down my river, approximately 550 to 600 feet. The duck blind was in focus and I had not adjusted my scope since the incident.) As mentioned before we could hear liners far south barely visible. This object in the 4 minutes of transit was absolutely quiet. Almost eerily so, that we did not discern even the road traffic ourselves or in recording. As it approached I saw a triangular black craft kinda like a stealth bomber, wings from nose but straight across tail from wing tip to wingtip (triangular). Its lights were ridiculously bright but did not seem to emit light (hard to describe) as it was directly above us we could see its belly. My wife with plain sight and myself still with binocs. The craft was moving no more than 30 km's per hour. And suddenly we both could see (as I had to drop the binocs because of brightness) the entire craft except its very tips with the lights. Transformed into the whitest and most perfectly spherical ball of white light, it was perfectly round and whitish blue, and only the tips of the craft were protruding. Despite the blinding whiteness of this orb, strangely, the colored lights were also very noticeable. The bright sphere went out. And the craft flashed three pink lights nose to tail (down the center) and then instantly two lights inside the colored lights of the wings but out from center of the rear light that flashed in the 3 sequence. And then it carried on, to the east. And stopping about a half mile from me, as it went over the rise to see the town of Cornwall. It seemed to consciously skirt the town and just do the circumference and come back. We watched this cycle 3 times and then it went north and we never saw it again. Total time within 1000 feet was about 5 minutes. Beyond 1000 feet about an hour. We have video from a crappy iPhone. But wouldn't you know, it only recorded when the thing was beyond a quarter mile, but did record sound and grey screen the entire time it was over us. You can hear us discuss its soundlessness, the fact we can hear further objects, but for video only grey screen.
So the object started out giving the appearance of a conventional aircraft, with standard red and green lights. But when it flew nearer, it was a dark triangle with lights, and then seemed to change to a perfect sphere of white light. When the sphere vanished, dimmer lights could be seen.
Now, despite the great detail in the report (which was very rare for most cases), I assigned this report a Strangeness of 5 (medium) and a Reliability of 6 (for detail). I did assign it a Conclusion of "u" or Unknown, because its description didn't conform to a simple explanation. But because the case was not investigated or followed-up, I couldn't give it a higher rating and hence it will not be among the "High Quality Unknowns" we list every year. Was it simply an aircraft?
